As part of the vibrant Airlie Beach Race Week festivities in August 2024, at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, local artists brought creativity to life through a series of workshops that left participants inspired and smiling. Running alongside the Creative Connections Whitsundays Inc. members' art exhibition, these workshops highlighted the depth of talent within the community and provided engaging, hands-on artistic experiences for attendees.
Quirky Creativity with Jacqui Henderson kicked off the weekend on Saturday morning, 10 August. Jacqui encouraged participants to release their inner child as they experimented with watercolour and ink to create fun, quirky pieces. The class was a hit, with laughter filling the room and participants praising Jacqui's ability to make art approachable and enjoyable, even for those who didn’t consider themselves artists.
Later that afternoon, Soft Pastels with Jahla Thompson drew a crowd eager to learn from the award-winning local artist. Jahla guided attendees step-by-step through creating stunning sunsets, inspiring many to explore the versatile medium of soft pastels further. The workshop was described as calming and educational, with participants leaving with not only their own masterpieces but also new skills and confidence.
Sunday afternoon brought a touch of indulgence with Paint and Sip with Melissa Stone. Guests enjoyed a complimentary beverage on arrival while Melissa led the group in painting sessions full of contrasting light and calm seas. The relaxed and social atmosphere made the workshop a standout for many, proving art can be both fun and therapeutic.
Wrapping up the series on Monday morning, Felting with Avril and Gabbie introduced participants to the tactile art of dry needle felting. Using wool roving, silk ribbons, and beads, attendees created beautiful textural pieces, experimenting with freeform designs. The workshop's mix of creativity and collaboration left everyone feeling inspired and eager to try more felting in the future.
Alongside these fantastic workshops, the Creative Connections Whitsundays Inc. art exhibition showcased incredible works by local artists, drawing praise from Race Week attendees. The combination of hands-on workshops and a professional exhibition created a unique cultural experience for the Whitsundays community.
The event was a resounding success, highlighting the region’s vibrant artistic talent and bringing people together to celebrate creativity during one of Airlie Beach’s most exciting annual events.
