A well-framed artwork is not just about aesthetics—it’s a statement of professionalism and respect for both the piece and the audience. Proper framing ensures that your artwork is presented in its best light, protects it from damage, and conveys a sense of care and craftsmanship. Here are the key steps to ensure your 2D wall-hung artworks achieve a polished, gallery-ready appearance:

  1. Engage a Professional Framer

    • If you can afford it, a professional framer is the best way to go. However, you can present an artwork with a store-bought frame but it requires a bit of extra work to make sure it is presented professionally.

  2. Choose Quality Materials

    • Invest in high-quality frames that complement the artwork. Avoid flimsy or mass-produced frames that detract from the piece or are the wrong shape or aspect ratio.

    • Use acid-free matting and backing boards to protect the artwork from discoloration and deterioration over time. If someone buys your work for a good price, they expect a good product. This includes the frame.

  3. Consider the Frame Style

    • The frame should enhance, not overpower, the artwork. Simple, neutral frames often work best, but always choose a style that aligns with the theme and medium of the piece.

  4. Secure and Tidy the Back

    • Avoid using stand backs, which are unsuitable for exhibition purposes.

    • Replace sawtooth hooks with a sturdy wire hanger. If fact I recommend replacing the backing board completely with an acid free board.

    • Attach the wire securely to D-rings mounted on either side of the frame,

ensuring it can support the weight of the artwork.

    • Make sure the back of the work is clean and free of marks or imperfections. Cover the back of the frame with card or a similar material to give a clean, finished look. This step also protects the artwork from dust and debris.

    • Canvas works can have a piece of canvas or calico stapled to the back to help lift the presentation and keep out dust and bugs.

  5. Ensure Proper Alignment

    • The artwork should sit squarely within the frame.

    • Check that the wire on the back is level and positioned so the piece hangs straight on the wall.

  6. Label Placement

    • Label the back of your artwork so that it can be identified by gallery hanging staff. Artwork Title and Artist name, are essential, the coordinators of the exhibition may require additional information as well, so read the terms and conditions carefully.

  7. Test Durability

    • Before delivering the artwork to the exhibition, double-check the frame’s stability. Ensure all fixings are tight and the frame can withstand handling.

By following these guidelines, you not only elevate the presentation of your artwork but also convey a sense of professionalism and respect for your craft. A carefully framed and presented piece can make a lasting impression on gallery visitors, collectors, and buyers, ensuring that your work is appreciated in the best possible way.
